Achakar Beach & Around the Caves

Most visitors know the site as “the Caves of Hercules” without realizing it sits within a specific place: Achakar, a coastal area about 14 km west of Tangier, on the same stretch of the Cap Spartel road covered in our guide to getting there. The beach that shares the name is worth a mention on its own, whether or not swimming is on your agenda.
The beach itself
Achakar Beach sits along the same coastline as the caves and the Cap Spartel headland — golden sand, clear Atlantic water, and open space that feels noticeably less developed than Tangier’s more central beaches. It’s a genuine local swimming and sunbathing spot, not a resort strip.
Surfing and water sports
If Tangier has a beach associated with surfing, it’s this one. The open Atlantic swell here is more consistent and better-shaped for wave riding than the city’s central shoreline, and the area is also used for kitesurfing. Conditions lean toward approachable rather than world-class — better suited to beginners and casual surfers than anyone chasing serious performance waves — and are generally best in mid-to-late summer, when the swell picks up.
Combining with a caves visit
Achakar Beach, the caves, and the Cap Spartel lighthouse all sit within a few minutes of each other along the same road, so most visitors treat this as one general area rather than separate destinations. If you’re building a full day around it, our half-day itinerary and Cap Spartel lighthouse guide cover the rest of the loop — the beach is an easy add-on before or after either.
Before you go
As with any open Atlantic beach, conditions can be rougher than they look, and we don’t have verified information on lifeguard coverage or seasonal safety flags for Achakar specifically — use ordinary open-water caution, particularly outside peak summer months when the beach may be quieter and less supervised.
